Sometimes in small towns like La Grande, important things never seem to change. And this can be a really good thing, at least for folks like Kathleen Williams, who runs The Island City Market and Deli. She’s continuing a tradition introduced by her father Ken, back when he owned his own grocery store—that of making a locally famous pastry called a “cream-filled log.” Ken himself had enjoyed these specialty donuts in his younger days when they were made by an even earlier La Grande store. Daughter Kathleen now represents a third generation of La Grande stores keeping the tasty confection available for the residents of La Grande.

Not that Kathleen does everything the way her dad did back when he was a grocer. Ken, for example, never sold Oregon Lottery products. Kathleen, who opened The Island back in 2011, waited only a week before becoming an Oregon Lottery retailer. She estimates that lottery sales account for about a third of her business now, noting that customers often come in to play lottery but end up purchasing other things too. “That’s where it helps grow the business,” she said, “because the customer is not only buying a lottery ticket; they’re buying beer or pop or whatever else while they’re here.”

When in La Grande, consider stopping by The Island Market and Deli to say Hi to Kathleen and pick up the latest Oregon Lottery tickets. And, whatever you do, don’t forget to try one of the cream-filled logs—La Grande’s tastiest tradition!

In May 2019, Jasper’s sold a $3.2 million winning Megabucks ticket at their store on Coburg Road. That meant their bonus added up to $32,000, an especially nice boost for their store. “To hear one of our guests won the Megabucks jackpot was incredible news!” said Tezra Kong, Director of Operations for Jasper’s. “This will be something our team will be talking about for years to come.”

Jasper’s staff was thrilled to sell the winning ticket and to be a part of one lucky customer’s good fortune. So excited in fact, that the owners decided to give some of the bonus to employees. “We look forward to sharing some of our bonus with the team that provided the exceptional guest service at Sheldon Jasper’s,” said Kong.

The King City Liquor Store is one of the first stores in the state to sell Lottery tickets. It also has a great history of winners passing through its doors. Original owner Leo Stratton used his years of experience to innovate his store, making it a popular spot for Oregon Lottery players to pick up their jackpot game tickets.

Leo Stratton passed away a few years ago, and the store is now owned by Sheri Daniels, his daughter. Daniels is continuing the store in her father’s memory, including their legacy of winning. Sheri enjoys telling the story of King City Liquor Store’s $23 million Oregon’s Game Megabucks winner back in the 1990s. The store hit it big again in 2018 when it sold an $8.5 million Megabucks ticket. “It’s very exciting to sell another winning ticket, my dad would have been proud”, Daniels said.

Daniels has worked at the store for over 40 years and misses working with her father. But she loves carrying on the family tradition. “We had a lot of fun with my dad,” Daniels said.

It can be tough running a business, but CJ’s Pub in Fairview recently got a $13,000 boost for selling a winning Win for Life ticket. A newly retired local man won the prize, taking home $1000 a week for life.

Chris Taylor, owner of CJ’s Pub, says he’ll be outfitting the place with new heating, air conditioning, and some new chairs. “It’s all going back into the business”, he said. What a great way to help the bottom line.
