Turning Sustainable Trees into Sustainable Jobs in Morrow County
Lottery funds help build one of America’s largest hardwood sawmills
Just east of Boardman, Oregon, sits a 30,000-acre farm of Pacific Albus, a fast-growing hardwood. Certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, the farm uses sustainable, eco-friendly methods: planting, harvesting and re-planting in a perpetual cycle. Not only does this tree farm provide over 150 jobs to Morrow County, these tall and lanky beauties also help clean the air, absorbing CO2 emissions along the highway corridor.
Soon, with funding help from the Oregon Lottery, a new sawmill – one of the largest of its kind in North America – will be built, providing 85 more full-time jobs.
