NOAA
Anchoring Jobs in Newport.
Newport gave its all when competing with several other sites to bring the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to town. However, it took $19.5 million in Oregon Lottery® funds for the Port of Newport to eventually land the new NOAA Marine Operations Center-Pacific, which supports nine NOAA ships that carry out marine research, fish stock assessments, climate studies and ocean mapping. The $38 million, five-acre project opened in August 2011, with a staff of 175, including 110 officers. The project means Newport will be home port to four ships, and host visiting ships as well. It will mean hundreds of family-wage jobs, and it's expected to pump $19 million into the local economy every year.
Lottery dollars also helped renovate the International Terminal—increasing vital commercial access—and acquire a boatyard site for the Port of Toledo, just upriver from Newport. With new local jobs, facility expansion and more opportunities for commerce, there’s a ripple of activity across Yaquina Bay.
