This holiday season, the Oregon Lottery is urging everyone not to give Lottery tickets to minors.
“During the holidays, many people buy Oregon Lottery Scratch-its and other games to give as stocking stuffers, use as gift tags, or slip into holiday cards,” said Oregon Lottery Director Larry Niswender. “We urge everyone that during the holidays, or anytime for that matter, not to give Lottery tickets to anyone under the age of 18. There are age restrictions on buying Lottery games and we like to extend those restrictions to the giving of these games.”
Problem gambling expert Dr. Jeff Marotta said, “I’ve had parents ask me why I make such a big deal out of gifting lottery tickets to kids. We need to think about what kind of message we are sending with a lottery ticket gift. A better gift is talking to your kids about the risks of gambling and helping them understand the best bets made in life aren’t taken by playing the lottery. Kids need to understand that if they want to make money, gambling is not the answer, and that while no one sets out to become a problem gambler, for kids and adults alike, it happens too often .”
This marks the fifth year that the National Council on Problem Gambling and the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors at Canada’s McGill University have partnered with lotteries around the world, including the Oregon Lottery, to share the message - lottery tickets should not be purchased as holiday gifts for children
Since 1992, more than $60 million in Lottery proceeds have funded efforts to reduce gambling related harm in Oregon including paying for a gambling treatment system that is widely available and free to Oregonians. For more information, go to www.1877MYLIMIT.org
