Lottery sales exceed previous year’s total for first time in three years

Nearly $560 million provided for State projects and programs in fiscal year 2011

August 9, 2011 - Salem, Ore. - The Oregon Lottery’s unaudited 2011 fiscal year sales of $1.04 billion represent the first time in three years that Lottery ticket sales have exceeded the previous year’s total. The FY 2011 sales total ranks as the fifth highest yearly sales in Lottery history and also continues a six-year trend started in FY 2006 of Lottery sales topping the $1 billion mark.

For FY 2011, the Lottery raised over $559.9 million for State programs. “These Lottery funds will have a huge impact throughout the state,” said Oregon Lottery Director Larry Niswender. “From helping fund our public schools to job creation to helping Oregon’s state parks, Lottery dollars continue doing good things for Oregon.”

Projects and programs receiving Lottery funds in the 2011-2013 biennium include:

  • The State School Fund - $556.9 million
  • Parks and Natural Resources – approximately $169 million
  • Business Development - $53.6 million
  • Counties - $37 million to be used for economic development
  • The Gambling Addiction Prevention & Treatment program - $10.9 million
  • The Oregon University System - $8.8 million
  • County Fairs - $3.6 million
  • More than $240 million dedicated for debt service on Lottery-backed bonds linked primarily to transportation and education projects

By law, no more than 16% of the Lottery’s total annual sales may be used for administrative costs (game vendor expenses, prizes, commissions to retailers, and Lottery operating expenses). Currently, the Lottery operates at less than 4% of its total annual sales.

Since the Oregon Lottery began selling tickets on April 25, 1985, it has earned over $7 billion for economic development, public education, state parks and watershed enhancements. For more information on the Oregon Lottery visit
